An unexpected transfer lands Jonathan Martin a banking job in the Sheikdom of Dahra. From day one, he discovers that no all is as it seems on the surface.
This is his story, a narration of significant events as they happened to him. In a world, his story is a series of adventures, some of which the world is yet not supposed to know. Many of these events are metaphors for the twists and turns of modern life.
At one and the same time, Jonathan Martin can be regarded as both hero and villain. The choice lies in the eye of the discerning reader.

Small Steps - Long Journey, is an autobiography novel that depicts my struggle to survive a nine-week coma and overcome the dependency of others.
In August 1985, a drunk driver torpedoed through his red light and blasted into my smaller mini truck. Instantly, I fell comatose for nine weeks, but the real story is in my tenacity to overcome obstacles in my life that were not there before.
As an athlete through school, I succumbed to a life far different than the playing field. Faced with difficulties that were taken for granted, suddenly my world became a battlefield just to survive. I take the reader on a voyage into the unknown disabled community, where I candidly express my emotions. The accident left me vulnerable, which allowed my father in close. We were both too stubborn to show weakness and that kept us apart.
My hopes are to share my story and inspire those who are injured every day, whether it is doctors & nurses or families & friends of those who receive care. I take the reader on a journey where hopefully you can find comfort in one person's survival.

America has to a large extant been built on the backs of immigrants who came here with hopes, dreams, aspirations, challenges, and desires. These emotions remain a part of all of us, for they are a large part of the human spirit. Reading about their journey and adventures nourishes one's own imagination about who you are, what you want to be, and how you want to achieve your destiny. Little about your life is about luck, chance, or hope. Your life has its foundation in guidance from your parents, friends, and relatives. Solid planning, education, and hard work. No one travels the same path. Italian immigrants like others came to America believing it provided for them new opportunities for a better home and a better place to enjoy and experience their lives. They never looked back.
America is composed of people from all walks of lives, from all countries of the earth, and from all races, ethnic groups, and persuasions of every description. Americans believe in themselves as individuals. With hard work they also believe in what America will bestow upon them for their efforts. Are you a beautiful American? I bet you are. Just look around you. They are everywhere. Americans the beautiful.

At the tender age of eleven years, I knew that I was not compatible with my community or my family. The available careers dangles before this impressionable black boy were construction worker, schoolteacher, or maybe working in the orange grove. My qualms about becoming a construction worker centered on working for my older brother. I had misgivings about going to college to become a schoolteacher (which was my mother's wish). If I became a grove worker, I would have to work for a white man with an education probably inferior to my own.
At that age, if I could have selected a career for myself, I would have been an airplane pilot. However, when I was eleven, little black boys were not allowed to become airplane pilots. In my community, I knew only a few people who could be called successful; that is, if success is defined as succeeding fully or in accordance with one's own desires. That is how I determine success. However, with the black mentality usually subordinate to the white man's wishes, sometimes blacks were confused about their "success.' If they were in their so-called station in life, perhaps kept there by subtle or not-so-subtle force, they mistakenly thought they were successful. Using my definition of success, those men in my community who were successful have left an indelible mark on my life.
